What a shame he became a casualty. I'm ashamed to admit that I know far more about WWII than WWI (my father fought in WWII, hence the interest) but I do know it was horrific. You and your family have every reason to be proud of him, no matter which "side" he was one. Similarly, my wife's grandfather survived for 6 years.
